Background & Challenge: Sun, Impact, and Safety Standards

The client, a government-funded primary school in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, needed to replace a deteriorating poured-rubber playground surface that had become a safety liability. The existing surface, installed 7 years prior, had cracked in multiple locations, creating trip hazards, and had lost approximately 60% of its original color depth due to UV degradation. The school had a strict budget constraint and needed a solution that could be installed during a single weekend without closing the playground for an extended period. 

UV Exposure Challenge: Melbourne experiences some of the highest UV levels in the world, with summer UV index regularly exceeding 11 and ambient temperatures reaching 45°C. The previous surface had used a low-grade NBR compound without UV stabilizers, resulting in rapid surface oxidation and granule breakdown. The new surface needed to maintain color and structural integrity for at least 10 years. 

Fall-Height Safety Challenge: The playground included climbing equipment with a maximum fall height of 1.8m. Australian safety standard AS 4422 required the surfacing to achieve a Head Injury Criterion (HIC) value below 1,000 for this fall height. The previous poured surface had never been tested and was suspected to be non-compliant. 

Installation Challenge: The school could not afford to close the playground for more than one weekend. The solution needed to be installable by the school’s own maintenance team (two staff members) without specialized contractors or curing time. 

Maintenance Challenge: The surface needed to withstand daily leaf blower cleaning, occasional pressure washing, and exposure to tree sap, bird droppings, and food spills from children’s lunches.

02. Our Tailored Solution

Solution: 30mm Normal Rubber Mat Tiles with 20% EPDM UV-Resistant for Outdoor Kids Playground

We recommended 30mm 1m*1m normal rubber mats with 20% EPDM granules as the optimal solution for this project’s combination of safety, durability, and installability requirements. The product also is suitable for swimming pool, backyard, walkway etc. outdoor use.

Product Specification: 1000×1000mm normal rubber mat with a 20% EPDM flecked UV-resistant surface layer and 80% SBR recycled rubber base. The EPDM surface layer acts as a UV shield, protecting the underlying SBR base from photodegradation. The 30mm thickness was selected to meet the AS 4422 fall-height requirement for 1.8m critical fall height with a safety margin. Color: mixed marbled pattern with 20% multi-color EPDM flecks (red, blue, yellow, green) on a black base—visually stimulating for children while hiding dirt and wear. 

Installation Method: The school’s two-person maintenance team completed the 800 m² installation over a single weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 8 hours per day). The process involved: (1) removing the old poured surface and leveling the compacted sand base; (2) laying a geotextile weed barrier; (3) dry-laying interlocking tiles from the center outward, engaging puzzle edges by hand pressure; (4) installing rubber edge restraints around the perimeter. No adhesive, no curing time, no specialized tools.

03. Final Results & Feedback

Results & Feedback: 18-Month Performance Validation

After 18 months of daily use by 420 students and exposure to two full Australian summers, we conducted a comprehensive performance validation. 

UV Resistance & Color Retention: Spectrophotometer measurement at 12 randomly selected locations compared tile color to the original retained sample. Average color retention was 95.2% (ΔE = 2.1, where ΔE < 3.0 is considered visually indistinguishable). This confirms that the 20% EPDM UV-resistant surface layer effectively shields the SBR base from photodegradation even under Melbourne’s extreme UV conditions. 

Fall-Height Impact Absorption: Independent laboratory drop-testing was conducted at month 18 using a 4.6kg hemispherical impactor dropped from 1.8m. The recorded Head Injury Criterion (HIC) value was 580, well below the AS 4422 safety threshold of 1,000. This validates that the 25mm thickness and SBR/EPDM compound maintain impact absorption performance even after 18 months of UV exposure and weathering. 

Joint Integrity: Measurement of 30 puzzle-edge joints showed all remained fully engaged with no visible lifting, buckling, or edge degradation. The 3mm drainage gaps remained clear of debris, confirming the self-cleaning design. 

Maintenance Feedback: The headmaster reported that the surface requires only weekly leaf blowing and quarterly pressure washing (60 bar, cold water) to maintain appearance. No staining from food spills, tree sap, or bird droppings has persisted beyond 48 hours. 

Safety Feedback: The school recorded zero serious playground injuries attributable to flooring failure during the 18-month period, compared to three such incidents in the final 12 months of the previous poured surface. The headmaster specifically noted: “Parents have commented on how much ‘softer’ the new surface looks and feels. Our injury reports speak for themselves.”
